MemoryCards.ie - Guide to buying memory cards

Buying memory cards today can be an arduous task for some people. It's hard to know which memory card is suitable for your device, whether the type of memory card supports a higher capacity and does you device support the new memory cards on the market. Here is a short guide to try and help determine which memory card is right for your device. Hopefully this will save you time and hassle later on down the road.

1. Knowing your memory card type?

Ok, let me just start by saying that there is an immense amount of electronic device on the market today and most of them have extra memory card slots for expandable memory usage. Before even considering which memory to buy you should must make sure that it is compatible with your electronic device. Every computer, phone, latop, PDA and modern device come with an extendable memory slot which allows you to store extra files, music and images on your device.

Knowing which memory type your device takes is the first task. 9 times out of 10 this information is available in your devices manual. If you are unfortunate enough to buy a device who's manual lacks this information it's up to you to scourer the internet for correct peripheral.

1.1 Important point to know:

Every device has a certain type of memory card ie Secure Digital (SD), Micro SD, Micro SDHC, SDHC, xD Picture etc. Pro Duo, Compact Flash. One important point to mention at this stage is that you must specific when it comes to choosing the correct card. One major mistake that people make is buying and SDHC card when their device will only supports SD. SD stands for Secure Digital where as SDHC stands for Secure Digital High Capacity. SD cards come in capacities up to 2gb whereas SDHC cards are 2gb and upwards. Ensure that you device supports SDHC before buying capacities higher than 2gb.

1.2 Class speed of Memory Cards.

Every memory card has a certain speed rating. The importance of speed rating come into play especially with high mega pixel cameras and camcorders. If your memory card has not sufficient speed to support your camera or camcorder it will only record in a lower quality. Class speeds start a 2x and progress upwards. The higher the speed the better the quality of photos and video you can record. Cheap memory cards may seem convenient for the price but they jeopardize the photo quality, which will only be noticed once you develop. Don't ever sacrifice price over quality with photos.

Final Point

Memory Cards store invaluable, irreplaceable information that is very important to our everyday lives. We live in a modern world where our most precious possessions are stored by intangible methods. The key is to never forget that a photo spells a thousand words and envokes emotion within us that can't be matched.
